Niemand weet precies wanneer de stenen in de steencirkels zijn geplaatst. Niemand weet waarvoor de cirkels dienden. Alle theorieën zijn gebaseerd op speculaties.
Uit onderzoek is komen vast te staan dat de steencirkels van Avebury tussen 8500 en 7000 voor Christus zijn ontstaan. In dezelfde tijd is ook de beroemde steencirkel van Stonehenge ontstaan.
Tussen 43 en 450 na Christus stond in de omgeving van de steencirkels een Romeins dorp. Na het vertrek van de Romeinen ontstond het dorp Avebury. Men kan dus vaststellen dat het dorp minimaal 1500 jaar oud is.
De steencirkels werden in 1649 ontdekt door John Aubrey. De ontdekking was spectaculair want zelfs koning Charles II de cirkels bezocht.
In 1930 werd het dorp Avebury gerestaureerd en in 1968 startten opgravingen bij de steencirkels. Tegenwoordig zijn de steencirkels beschermd door National Trust.
Avebury stone circles
Nobody knows exactly when the stones are placed in the stone circles. Nobody knows what the circles were for. All theories are based on speculations.
Research has shown that the stone circles of Avebury were created between 8,500 and 7,000 BC. The famous stone circle of Stonehenge was also created at the same time.
Between 43 and 450 AD there was a Roman village in the area of the stone circles. After the departure of the Romans, the village of Avebury was born. It can therefore be established that the village is at least 1500 years old.
The stone circles were discovered in 1649 by John Aubrey. The discovery was spectacular because even King Charles II visited the circles.
In 1930 the village of Avebury was restored and in 1968 excavations started at the stone circles. Nowadays the stone circles are protected by National Trust.
