Bath Abbey

In 1088 besloot William II tot de bouw van deze abdij. Hij kreeg hiervoor opdracht van de bisschop John de Villula. De Villula wilde als bisschop niet meer in Wells wonen en koos Bath als zijn nieuwe thuis. In 1090 startte de bouw van de kathedraal, waarbij een oude Saksische kerk werd gesloopt. Het was pas af in 1170. De bisschop overleed al in 1122.
Een paar feiten:
De abdij is 67 meter lang, 22 meter breed en de toren is 49 meter hoog. In het gebouw zijn 52 ramen aangebracht, die symbool staan voor het aantal weken in het jaar. De vier grote pilaren staan voor de 4 seizoenen en de 12 kleine pilaren de maanden van het jaar.
In de kerk hangen 641 tableaus en liggen 849 grafzerken. In totaal liggen 3800 personen onder de abdij begraven. De laatste begrafenis stamt uit 1845.
In een van de ramen is Koning Arthur afgebeeld. Hoewel hij nooit heeft geleefd, wordt hij hier toch als een heersend vorst weergegeven.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1090, by demolishing an old Saxon church. It was not finished until 1170. The bishop already died in 1122.

The abbey is 67 meters long, 22 meters wide and the tower is 49 meters high. There are 52 windows in the building, which symbolize the number of weeks in the year. The four large pillars represent the 4 seasons and the 12 small pillars the months of the year.
There are 641 tableaus in the church and 849 gravestones. A total of 3800 people are buried under the abbey. The last funeral dates from 1845.
King Arthur is depicted in one of the windows. Although he has never lived, he is nevertheless represented here as a ruling king.
