Brough Castle is een ruïne nabij het dorp Brough. Het werd in de elfde eeuw gebouwd door William Rufus. Rufus bouwde het nabij de resten van een Romeins fort en het was bedoeld om de route door de Pennine Bergen te controleren. In 1174 werd het kasteel door de Schotten in hun strijd tegen Henry II overvallen en verwoest. Na de oorlog werd het herbouwd en in de eeuwen daarna werd het regelmatig versterkt.
In 1521 vierde Henry Clifford een groot kerstfeest op het kasteel. Tijdens de festiviteiten brak een grote brand uit die het kasteel volledig in de as legde. Het kasteel bleef daarna tot 1959 een ruïne, waarna Anne Clifford het uiteindelijk liet renoveren. Helaas heeft dat niet lang mogen duren want in 1666 brak opnieuw brand uit waarbij het kasteel andermaal in de as werd gelegd. De schade was onherstelbaar en gedurende de jaren daarna vervielen de resten tot de huidige ruïne.
In 1921 werd het kasteel overgedragen aan de English Heritage en is nu een toeristische attractie.
Vlak voor het kasteel bevindt zich een grote boerderij waar je terecht kunt voor een kop koffie of thee, lunch en eigen gemaakt ijs.

Brough Castle is a ruin near the village of Brough. It was built in the eleventh century by William Rufus. Rufus built it near the remains of a Roman fortress and it was intended to control the route through the Pennine Mountains. In 1174 the castle was raided and destroyed by the Scots in their fight against Henry II. After the war it was rebuilt and in the following centuries it was regularly strengthened.
In 1521 Henry Clifford celebrated a big Christmas party at the castle. During the festivities, a large fire broke out that completely destroyed the castle. The castle remained a ruin until 1959, after which Anne Clifford eventually had it renovated. Unfortunately, that did not last long because in 1666 fire broke out again and the castle was once again put into the ashes. The damage was irreparable and during the following years the remains fell into the current ruin.
In 1921 the castle was transferred to the English Heritage and is now a tourist attraction.
Just in front of the castle is a large farm where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, lunch and homemade ice cream.
