Geoffrey of Monmouth werd rond 1190/1200 geboren en overleed in 1154/1155 in Cardiff. Hij was een christelijk geleerde en geestelijk. Hij behoort tot één van de belangrijkste geschiedschrijvers van Groot Brittannië. Geoffrey bezocht de universiteit van Oxford en werd later bisschop van St. Asaph.
Zijn bekendste boek is de ‘Historia Regum Britanniae’, de geschiedenis van de Britse koningen. Volgens de historia zouden de Britse koningen afstammen van Aeneas. Een groot deel van zijn boek is gebaseerd op de Arthurlegenden en zijn boek is één van de eerste teksten waar Koning Arthur in voorkomt.
In Monmouth werkt Geoffrey vooral in de priory van de kerk. Hij zat altijd bij het aam, dat uitkijkt op de heuvelen rond de stad. Ter herinnering daaraan is een plaquette aangebracht.
De gemeente heeft enkele jaren geleden een eerbetoon gemaakt aan Geoffrey: zij hebben een prachtig wandtapijt gemaakt waarin Arthur, Vortigern en Geoffrey worden afgebeeld. Dit wandtapijt hangt nu in de priory en is te bezichtigen.
Geoffrey of Monmouth was born around 1190/1200 and died in 1154/1155 in Cardiff. He was a Christian scholar and spiritual. He is one of the most important historians of Great Britain. Geoffrey attended the University of Oxford and later became Bishop of St. Asaph.
His best known book is the "Historia Regum Britanniae", the history of the British kings. According to historia, the British kings were descended from Aeneas. A large part of his book is based on the Arthurian legends and his book is one of the first texts in which King Arthur appears.
In Monmouth, Geoffrey works are honoured in the priory of the church. He always sat by the aam, which overlooks the hills around the city. A plaque has been added as a reminder of this.
The community made a tribute to Geoffrey a few years ago: they made a beautiful tapestry depicting Arthur, Vortigern and Geoffrey. This tapestry now hangs in the priory and can be visited.
