Oxford is nadrukkelijk verbonden met universiteiten en als universiteitsstad ook met Cambridge. Maar deze stad, vernoemd naar de rivier de Ox (Ford is een doorwaadbare plaats), is ook beroemd vanwege haar detectives. Colin Dexter maakte deze stad wereldberoemd door de avonturen van Chief Inspector Morse en zijn sidekick Robbie Lewis, die na het overlijden van John Thaw een eigen serie kreeg, Lewis.
In Oxford zijn speciale rondleidingen langs alle plekken waar de verhalen zich hebben afgespeeld, zoals ook het beroemde Randolph Hotel. Hier bevindt zich de Morse Bar. Natuurlijk moesten we hier als echte fans wel even een kop koffie drinken.
Dit was de kers op de taart want enkele dagen daarvoor hadden we Kevin Whateley in Newcastle ontmoet na afloop van een prachtig concert door de BBC Big Band. En zo is de cirkel weer rond.
