Monmouth castle ligt dicht bij het centrum, op een heuvel, vlak bij de rivier de Monnow. Het was ooit een belangrijk grenskasteel en de geboorteplaats van Henry V van Engeland.
Tijdens de Engelse burgeroorlog raakte het kasteel zwaar beschadigd en ging daarna naar een andere eigenaar. In 1647 stortte het kasteel in tot de huidige ruïne. Nu is op het terrein een regimentsmuseum gevestigd.
De bouw van het kasteel startte in 1267 in opdracht van de Graaf van Lancaster, Edmund Crouchback.

During the English Civil War the castle was badly damaged and then went to another owner. In 1647 the castle collapsed into the current ruin. Now a regimental museum is located on the site.
The construction of the castle started in 1267 by order of the Earl of Lancaster, Edmund Crouchback.
