St. Martin’s church was al een oude kerk toen in 597 na Christus Augustine samen met 40 reizigers de kerk bezocht. Onder hen waren Romeinse monniken en Frankische vertalers. Zij wilden de boodschap van Jezus Christus verkondigen aan koning Ethelbert en de inwoners van Kent.
De monnik Bede schreef in 731 na Christus het volgende over dit bezoek:
‘In het oosten van de stad staat een oude kerk in de name van St. Martin, gebouwd tijdens de Romeinse bezetting. Koningin Bertha kwam hier regelmatig diensten volgen. De groep verzamelde zich in deze kerk en begon missen te vieren, zongen psalmen, bidden en doopten inwoners van de stad. Uiteindelijk werd ook koning Ethelbert tot het Christendom bekeerd. Hij gaf de opdracht om meer kerken te bouwen.’
Op het kerkhof van deze kerk vind je meer dan 900 graven. De oudste stamt uit 1686 en hoort toe aan Thomas Emptage. De ramen van de kerk zijn bijzonder mooi. Kijk hier voor een impressie.

St. Martin’s church was already an old church when Augustine visited the church with 40 travelers in 597 AD. Among them were Roman monks and Frankish translators. They wanted to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ to King Ethelbert and the people of Kent.
The monk Bede wrote the following about this visit in 731 AD:
"In the east of the city is an old church in the name of St. Martin, built during the Roman occupation. Queen Bertha regularly followed services here. The group gathered in this church and began celebrating masses, singing psalms, praying, and baptizing city residents. In the end, King Ethelbert was also converted to Christianity. He gave the order to build more churches. "
In the cemetery of this church you will find more than 900 graves. The oldest is from 1686 and belongs to Thomas Emptage. The windows of the church are particularly beautiful. Look here for an impression.
